David Hamley was born in Cardiff in 1942 and currently lives in Llandaff. He and his wife were married in 1969 and have two children.  He graduated first as an architect from the Welsh School of Architecture (University of Wales) with first class honours, following which he obtained a qualification in landscape architecture at Birmingham Polytechnic. He was a registered architect and a member of the RIBA.

After leaving university in 1966, David Hamley worked as an assistant architect with Cardiff City Council. In 1968, he was invited to join HMR Burgess + Partners, a private architectural practice, as a senior architect and associate. In 1975, David Hamley joined Wyn Thomas + Associates becoming the partner responsible for all architectural projects (and remaining in this role when Wyn Thomas plc amalgamated with Gordon Lewis Ltd until his retirement). Over the years he has had particular experience dealing with listed buildings and designing in conservation areas, rural areas and other sensitive sites which require a high standard of design. Under his control the Practice won several Civic trust Commendations and Lord Mayor’s Awards. His experience includes major commissions for universities such as the Queen’s Buildings at Newport Road for Cardiff University. He has worked for Cadw at Caerphilly Castle, National Museum of Wales at both St Fagans and Cathays Park and National Library of Wales at Aberystwyth.

David helped to establish the Wales Landscape Group (now Landscape Institute Wales) and is a past Hon Secretary and Chairman.  Until he retired he was an RIBA external examiner at the Welsh School of Architecture. He also qualified as an adjudicator under the Housing Grants Construction and Regeneration Act and was accepted onto the RIBA List of Adjudicators to deal with disputes in the construction industry.

In 2007 he was elected a member of the Listed Building Advisory Committee for the United Reformed Church and continues to advise the Church on all planning applications concerning its listed buildings in Wales.

David Hamley is an accomplished pianist and accompanist. He was a founder member of the award winning choir, Cor Aelwyd Caerdydd and was its accompanist for over 25 years.
