Portraits form part of the collection of almost every art gallery in the Western world. What makes a ‘great’ portrait? How have portraitists represented their subjects? How have they been interpreted? How has portraiture changed over the centuries? From El Greco’s mysterious ‘Lady in a Fur Wrap’, to Vermeer’s iconic ‘Girl with the Pearl Earring’, to Norman Rockwell’s 20th century entertaining ‘Triple Self Portrait, we will consider how artists have managed to portray the essence of an individual on canvas.
