Complete performance of Sonatas for viola and harpsichord BWV 1027-29

The three Sonatas BWV 1027-29 are Bach at the highest level. Written originally for viola da gamba and harpsichord, they also appeared in other forms, such as flute trios or solo organ sonatas. Here are given a fresh reading on viola (da braccio) and harpsichord, while maintaining all the necessary elements of Baroque style. Bach’s biographer, Johann Forkel, pointed out that in chamber music the great composers preferred to play the viola: «In musical parties... he took pleasure in playing the viola. With this instrument he was, as if were, in the centre of harmony, whence he could best hear and enjoy it on both sides».

Johann Sebastian Bach was the first composer to understand the potential of the viola tonally and technically.

Both performers, Despina Homatidou (Greece) and Simone Laghi (Italy), are specialised in Historical Performance Practice and have been living and working in Cardiff for several years.

Despina, after studying in Greece, gained her diploma in the harpsichord at the Royal Welsh College of Music in Cardiff and her Master’s Degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. She has been teaching at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama since 2012.

Simone obtained his viola and violin diploma in Italy, then went to study Early Music and Baroque Violin in Amsterdam. In 2017 he obtained a PhD in Performance at Cardiff University and he is specialised in Italian 18th-century composers who lived in England and Wales. He is currently working as a freelance editor and musician, performing with several European orchestras and publishing recordings with his group, Ensemble Symposium.
